We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, equitable workplace where everyone can thrive. We believe that diversity strengthens our organisation, and we are committed to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across everything we do.

By creating a culture of belonging, we empower our employees to bring their true selves to work, enabling us to better support children and young people with epilepsy.

Supporting Our Employees to SHINE

As part of our workforce, you’ll play a vital role in positively transforming the lives of children and young people with epilepsy. To support this, we invest in our staff, offering:

  • Comprehensive training and development opportunities
  • Ongoing EDI initiatives to ensure no one is left behind
  • Active Staff Networks for shared experiences and support

We take a proactive approach to address structural inequities, regularly monitoring data, reviewing policies, and tackling barriers related to:

  • Disability
  • Race equality
  • Religion and belief
  • Gender equity
  • LGBTQIA+ inclusion
  • Socio-economic equity
  • Caring responsibilities
  • Menopause support

By embracing intersectionality, we acknowledge the overlapping social systems of oppression and privilege that shape our experiences and work towards breaking these down.

Staff Networks

At Young Epilepsy, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace for all our employees. Our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives are designed to foster a culture where everyone feels valued and respected.

Our Staff Network groups play a crucial role in promoting equality and inclusion within Young Epilepsy. These groups include LGBTQIA+, Race Equality, Menopause, Disability, Parents Carers and Families, Unpaid Carers, Interfaith, and the main Shine Working Group. Meetings are held six times a year, either in person or on Teams, with rotating times to accommodate different working patterns.

Purpose of the Networks

The primary goal of our Staff Networks is to make Young Epilepsy and St Piers the best workplace for all staff. These networks provide a safe space to raise awareness of equality and inclusion issues, enhancing our organisation-wide understanding of policies, practices, and procedures. They also highlight the need for training, events, and reverse staff mentoring, which helps shape and deliver our organisational strategy.

Benefits of Joining a Network

Staff members who join a network receive peer-to-peer support and the opportunity to share their lived experiences. This support offers unique perspectives and empowers individuals from marginalised groups to overcome barriers. Additionally, staff have the chance to provide a voice for under-represented employees, increase their understanding of equality issues, and become role models for others who may not feel comfortable sharing their journey.

Our Approach

  • Empathise: Provide peer-to-peer support and understanding.
  • Equip: Increase understanding of equality issues and gain skills to champion these issues.
  • Empower: Give a voice to employees from under-represented groups and become role models.
  • Evaluate: Shape strategy, practice, policy, and procedure.
