Young Epilepsy is delighted that new Ofsted guidance now includes a check for schools’ medical conditions support as part of their safeguarding assessment.
We have been campaigning for children and young people with epilepsy to get the support they need at school to be safe and included alongside their friends. The new guidance for Ofsted inspectors makes absolutely clear that supporting children with medical conditions is a safeguarding issue.
Inspectors will now evaluate how well school leaders are meeting their legal duty to children with medical conditions as part of their safeguarding assessment. This is the first time that the medical conditions duty has been included in official Ofsted guidance since the duty was introduced in 2014.
The change in guidance follows Young Epilepsy’s campaigning - with partners in the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance - to influence the new Ofsted inspection framework and the Department for Education’s safeguarding guidance to schools.
