Intervention
The individual profile of strengths, needs and difficulties derived from in-depth assessments provides the basis for introducing appropriate interventions. Intervention can take the form of one or a combination of the following:
Cognitive Rehabilitation or Remediation
We may be involved in assisting a student who has a specific cognitive difficulty such as poor memory, limited concentration or information processing difficulties by working individually with the student and/or advising staff and families how to help the student improve or get around their difficulties.
Learning Programmes
Following on from above, we may also develop learning programmes. These identify methods for best meeting students’ individual learning styles and needs. The suggestions are based on the findings of the cognitive or neuropsychological assessment and they are designed to make it possible for the child to compensate for their difficulties by making the most of their strengths.
Behaviour Management Programmes
These are devised by the psychologists in close consultation with other members of the multi-disciplinary team. It is usually the staff working with the students in the education and residential environments who implement the programmes under the guidance of a psychologist. We strive to provide practical demonstrations on how the guidelines should be implemented in practice and we can provide specific training to enhance the effectiveness of the programme if required. We meet with staff on a regular basis to monitor progress and modify strategies as necessary. Parents and carers are also encouraged to be involved in the programme to ensure continuity and consistency between home and Young Epilepsy.
Individual Therapy
We can provide individual therapy to address a range of psychological and behavioural issues such as anxiety, depression, anger management or assertiveness training.
Group Therapy
The psychologists, often in collaboration with the other therapists, may run groups for students to implement training in different of skill areas e.g. social-skills training and safety awareness training.
